India Plans Record $2 Billion Drone Procurement from Domestic Manufacturers
India is preparing a record drone procurement program worth more than $2 billion from domestic manufacturers. The acquisition, driven by lessons from regional and global conflicts, will focus on reconnaissance drones, armed unmanned systems, loitering munitions, and counter-drone technologies while strengthening defense self-reliance.
According to the Drone Federation of India, total procurements could exceed 200 billion rupees, equivalent to more than $2 billion, with deliveries expected within 18 to 24 months through fast-track procurement procedures. The planned acquisitions are expected to significantly expand India's drone inventory and enhance operational readiness across multiple defense domains.
The procurement push follows capability gaps identified during clashes with Pakistan in May last year, as well as lessons drawn from ongoing global conflicts, including the war in Ukraine. These developments have prompted New Delhi to prioritize the rapid acquisition of advanced drone technologies to strengthen surveillance, strike capabilities, and battlefield awareness.
The planned purchases are expected to focus on reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicles, armed drones, loitering munitions, and counter-drone systems. Defense planners view these technologies as critical for modern warfare, border security, intelligence gathering, and protection against emerging aerial threats.
Several major domestic defense manufacturers stand to benefit from the proposed orders, including Adani Defence, Larsen & Toubro, Tata Advanced Systems, and ideaForge. The procurement program is expected to provide a substantial boost to India's defense manufacturing ecosystem while encouraging further investment and innovation in drone technology.
The initiative also aligns with the government's broader objective of achieving greater self-reliance in defense production through programs such as Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX). If implemented as planned, the procurement drive will represent a significant milestone in India's effort to build a robust domestic defense industry and reduce dependence on foreign military technology.
